Located within the Brassington Conservation Area, in an ancient lead-mining area, Hillocks Barn is situated up Red Lion Hill in a quiet, secluded part of this historic village. The village has two excellent pubs both serving a selection of beers and wines and fine food. Ye Olde Gate Inn, taking its name from the turnpike gate opposite, dates from 1616. Within a mile of the Peak District National Park and close to many famous tourist attractions, the area offers excellent walking and cycling opportunities and a wide range of water sports at Carsington Water, a mile to the South East. St James’ Church, dating back to Norman times, stands out in the heart of the village. In addition, Kedleston Hall, Calke Abbey, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are all within easy driving distance. Local caves are hidden in the dramatic Harborough Rocks, half a mile to the East of the village, a popular venue for climbing enthusiasts.
